Frequently Asked Questions

Will wax removal hurt?

Generally, no.

The ear canal is a sensitive place, the second inner half full of nerve endings. Because of this, the farther in we go to remove wax, the greater the chance that we may touch a sensitive area. This is likely to make you jump a little, or maybe cough, perhaps even briefly feel a little dizzy or lightheaded, but in the ordinary way it shouldn't be painful. Pain when removing wax is often a sign of underlying inflammation or infection, and if we see any signs of this, we will let you know.

Regardless, if you want us to stop at any time, say so and we will stop.

Can I pay in cash?

Sorry, no.

Modern banking and business practice is digital and really not cash-friendly, so we offer simple online payment via our website.

When might you use manual removal?

When microsuction alone cannot do the job.

Earwax can come in many forms, and for some it may be too thick to suction away, too stubborn to loosen that way, or the suction may be causing the material to vibrate in the ear causing a squealing noise. We try to minimise distress by limiting exposure to this sound.

You mention microsuction is noisy - how noisy?

Typically around the same volume as when you rub the lobe in front of your ear canal, known as the tragus: Around 70- 80dBA.

This level is unlikely to cause distress unless you have hyperacausis - a severe sensitivity to noise, or strong recruitment - when hearing loss means there is little room between very quiet and very loud sounds, so a small change feels like a big one. It is likely you will know if you have either of these conditions. The closer we get to the eardrum the louder suction becomes, so we try to minimise suction that far in. If the suction grasps loose, dead skin in the ear this can cause a resonance that can be louder. Once we hear this sound we will reassess whether to continue with suction and be guided by you.

Can anything go wrong?

Microsuction is the gold standard for safe earwax removal, however you need to understand the possible side-effects.

Please see here for more information.

How often should I have my earwax removed?

This depends upon your needs.

We will discuss your history with earwax and any previous removal you have had done and agree with you if a future appointment would be beneficial. It is entirely your decision but we will advise if we feel a future appointment would not be necessary.

Do I need to do anything ahead of an appointment?

Please use olive oil ear drops (from your pharmacy) for up to 7 days

Speak to your pharmacist or doctor to make sure you are suitable for ear drop use. The type of olive oil the pharmacies sell is super-refined and treated to remove impurities that could cause infection. Please do not attempt to use cooking oil as this could result in pain and infection.

Can I re-book an appointment?

Yes, of course.

Please contact us if you need to rebook an appointment. Please ensure you include a phone number or email. Also, if after booking you decide the appointment is not for you at all, we can arrange a refund. We can only refund to the original payment card.
